Darren Roberts is a publisher and integrated media professional who served as CEO of AVN Media Network, Inc. (AVN) between the years of 1996 and 2011. His vision and dedication were instrumental to AVN’s success in becoming a globally recognized brand. Roberts, along with partner Paul Fishbein, created a brand which has transcended the industry into mainstream America. Today the AVN brand is known the world over for their consumer and trade events, culminating in the annual AVN Awards Show, often referred to as the “Oscars of Adult.”
Through Roberts’ imaginative strategy, the re-engineering of key processes, and the creative use of technology, the AVN business model has been analyzed and emulated by mainstream media organizations the world over. Their progressive approach applied emerging technologies to the linear publishing model, expanding their business vertically and allowing for rapid multi-sector growth.
In 2002 Roberts was singled-out by Details Magazine in its annual Power List, where he was referred to as a “pioneer” within the industry.
AVN’s market data and business information has been cited in a wide range of media, including Variety, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Detroit Free Press, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, ABC, CBS, NBC, KTLA, FOX, MTV, VH1, and many major news organizations.
In 2010 both Roberts and Fishbein sold their stake in AVN to pursue other interests. Roberts now spends the majority of his time analyzing how emerging trends in technology will affect the adult entertainment industry and its consumer.
The adult industry’s journey, development, and challenges have made it what it is and will carry it into the future. Regardless of the roadblocks it has faced or the controversy it inspires, there is little doubt the industry will work to maintain a platform that not only makes money, but also stays at the forefront of new media and technological advancements.
